Rat Primary Neuronal Cells

Primary neuronal cultures are commonly used to study the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie human brain functions. Cortical neuronal cultures represent an excellent experimental model for studying neuronal development and functionality of all cortical circuits. Cells can be fixed at different stages of development for the study of molecules involved in the synaptogenic processes. Hippocampal neuronal cultures represent an excellent model of central neurons for the study of neuronal communication (synapse) given they develop synchronously in a well defined set of events. Astrocytes represent the major cell type in the brain. They are considered important key regulators of many CNS functions, among which neurotransmission, maintenance of the blood-brain barrier, regulation of, extracellular ion homeostasis. Microglia represent the resident immunocompetent cells within the central nervous system. They play a major role in neuroinflammatory processes leading to neuronal degeneration.

Cortical neurons are obtained from the cortex of embryonic (E18-E19) Sprague Dawley rats. Each vial contains approx. 3 million cells. Each lot of cortical neurons has been validated for specific neuronal markers (i.e. beta III tubulin, MAP-2).

Hippocampal neurons are extracted from the hippocampal region of embryonic (E18-E19) Sprague Dawley rats. Each vial contains approx. 3 million cells. Cells can be provide at different stages of development for the study of molecules involved in the synaptogenic processes, and special culturing times (i.e. 7 div) can be ordered at no extra charge. Cell purity is assessed by specific antibody staining (i.e. beta III tubulin, MAP-2).

Cortical astrocytes are obtained from the cortex of embryonic (E21) Sprague Dawley rats. Each vial contains approx. 3 million cells. Special culturing times (i.e. 7 div) can be ordered at no extra charge. Cell purity is assessed by specific antibody staining (i.e. GFAP).

Hippocampal astrocytes are extracted from the hippocampal area of either embryonic (E18) Sprague Dawley rats and mantained in culture for at least 14 div. Each vial contains approx. 3 million cells. Special culturing times (i.e. 7 div) can be ordered at no extra charge. Cell purity is assured by specific antibody staining (i.e. GFAP).

Microglia are isolated from glial cocultures of embryonic (E18) rat brains. Microglia cells are fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde at 3 div on 16mm diameter coverslips. Cells can be plated on 24 mm diameter coverslips upon request at no additional cost.
